Sewing and hiking

I don’t have a lot to report except that we’re still having a great time in Tucson. On Thursday we went to Madiera Canyon in the Coronado National Forest.

It’s a bird watching area. We didn’t actually see tons of birds but we saw Avorn Woodpeckers and Mexican Jays. Both were new to us. There’s regular water in this canyon so the microclimate was quite lush compared to everywhere else around here. It’s one of the most peaceful and relaxing places I’ve ever been.

One of the cool trees there is the Alligator Juniper. You can see how it got that name.

On the sewing front I made some good progress on the tree blocks for the bear quilt.

Yesterday we hung close to the condo, did some exercise, had some pool time. We checked on the hummingbird nest and there are 2 eggs now! Just a lovely and relaxing day. Today we’re headed to Sabino Canyon for a hike.

Those two birds would be new to me also. The downey and hairy woodpeckers are more common here, although I have seen a pileated once or twice. It is weird that I love watching birds even while having an irrational fear of them. Still, both things are true.

The alligator tree would be great to do a rubbing on for a textured art paper. (yes, I have been watching a collage class. ha ha)

It looks like you are moving along on the quilt.

Two hummingbird eggs, wonderful!! I hope they stay safe and warm, and hatch with perfect baby birds.

Your photos of the landscape and birds are great. Love that tree! I’m looking forward to watching your progress on your bear quilt. Enjoy your time away from this snow and ice. Our streets are still covered in ice.

I didn’t leave the house all weekend; it was too cold! Looks like it will get up to 24 today – a heat wave! LOL!! It was like 6 when I left for work this morning. Patty

I’ve never heard of either of those birds and did a consult with the google to see what they look like. We love woodpeckers and have three different kinds at our suet feeder (downy, hairy, and red-breasted). Last winter we had a pileated but haven’t seen him this year (although I’ve heard him).
