Cutting, cutting, cutting

If you have filled me for a long time you know that I do things in volume. Instead of making 1 postcard, I make 30. Dye some tea towels? 2 dozen. We’ll, this week is the week for cutting veterans quilt kits. I work on the veterans quilts when we have sewing days at quilt club. It’s so much easier and more relaxing to have my project cut out and ready to go.  But if I’m going to cut out 1 kit, I might as well cut out enough for a couple of years.

I was down to 3 kits so I ordered a bunch of patriotic batiks (on sale) in December.

I got everything ironed Saturday morning and got started.

I have several very easy patterns that I use over and over and I usually cut 2 kits in each pattern. Since it will be months before I open them again, I make sure they are very organized in plastic bags. There’s a diagram of the pattern visible  on the outside.

Inside that zippered bag are 2 other bags, 1 for each kit that includes the binding. This simple “woven” pattern was my first kit.

This one is actually mostly leftover backing fabrics. The red batik is the only new fabric. Both of these quilts will have the same swirl border.

This is one that I’ve made so many times. The 2 prints at the bottom are the sashing fabrics.

I was getting a little fatigued looking at only patriotic fabric so the rest of the kits will have 1 patriotic quilt and one that will give me some hope of reducing the rest of my stash. This is a simple square in a square block. I’ve made at least 6 versions of this before.

I think this is called Chandelier. I cut the patriotic one and will tackle the stash version tomorrow. I got 9 kits cut this weekend.

My wrists and hands are a little sore today so I might need to divert to the longarm for some of today. We are supposed to get some severe storms today so we’ll see how it goes.

It might just be crochet day if the storm affects our power. I am making good progress on my big crochet blanket

As I was reading your post I wondered how your wrists were holding up because if I cut a lot like that mine hurt! Hope your power stays on.

I feel your pain! My arms and shoulders are hurting today from all the quilting and trimming I did this weekend. Sometimes you don’t realize how much effort it takes to cut thru layers of fabric. That is amazing how many kits you now have made up!

It would be my back that hurts from all that cutting! What a great selection you have cut and ready to go!! I find a cut a bit, sew a bit and then cut some more. 😊 Enjoy your blog! We’re in an area for those severe storms as well. The next few hours may be interesting!!

I do love having projects ready to pick up and sew — but I no longer do mass cuttings like you are. I might cut for 2-3 quilts, but then I go do other things and let my body recover before it has truly started to hurt. Everyone finds their own system – and I admire your dedication to RWB quilts.
