Etched glasses

Etched glasses

My family doesn’t exchange gifts for Christmas so I never have much Christmas shopping/making to do. But I have a group of girlfriends that have been getting together monthly for over 10 years, maybe 15, and I love exchanging gifts with them. One of the group, Kim, makes homemade peanut brittle and I’m convinced that if she ever stopped that the group would completely fall apart. I can’t eat the brittle but Chris might divorce me if I didn’t bring it home every year. It’s the cr@ck of the candy world. It might even be more like m3th, it’s so addictive.

We had our Christmas gathering last night so I can mow share what I made everyone this year. I was in the mood to do some glass etching so everyone got a set of 4 bar glasses. The original plan was to do lovely monograms and that idea lasted about 1 days before I got bored with the idea. I’m going to show you the glasses first with the vinyl and tape on the so you can actually see the designs.

Lora volunteers with pet rescue organizations and like her pets better than people.

Susan and Mitzi, both love gardening but I had another idea for Mitzi. Susan got flowers.

Mitzi has a vacation home, eventual retirement home, in South Carolina so she got beachy things and a mosquito. She calls her house Skeeter Haven.

Kim is my sewing/crafting buddy so she got the glasses I would have done for myself. I would exchange the knitting needles for a crochet hook, but, otherwise, it’s spot on.

It’s really important that the vinyl mask be pressed on tightly because the etching cream will get under the smallest bubble.

The actual etching part is easy. Just paint on some etching cream, let it sit for a couple of minutes and then wash it off. I caught 2 of them before etching where the vinyl wasn’t stuck right and there was only 1 that etched with a bubble. So, I and to recut 3 of them. That’s a pretty good success rate for me!

It turns out that the hard part was boxing them! I bought 8 x 8 x 8 boxes. I had to cut them down to 4.25″ tall and then used the cut off pieces to create the support grid on the inside. The boxes are flimsy so I also cut a piece of cardboard for the bottom.

Each glass got tissue paper and bubble wrap with another piece of bubble wrap on top.

I don’t know if you can really see them, but here are all 4 sets done.

When I am traveling with gifts and need to stack them, I use old Christmas cards as my bow.

The glasses are such thoughtful, personalized gifts. I’ve made peanut brittle for the holidays in the past and my friend’s husband was ever so diligent about helping her carry her gifts in from our holiday lunch….he, too, would divorce her if she didn’t bring it home, lol.

I know the “gist” of how to etch glass, but I have never done it. It looks like you did a great job. I really love the pet ones and the palm tree.
It took me a minute to figure out the pincushion.

What a fabulous gift! I need to try etching some glass. The hard part for me would be making the stencils, as I don’t have a cutter.
