Crochet and a hike

Crochet and a hike

Two of our friends left Friday after Caroline and I kayaked. The rest of the day was spent reading,  crocheting and doing some chores.

I’m making great progress on this blanket. Laura says her Mom would like it to cover her legs while watching TV. I want to get it done so she can take it home with her.

Yesterday, Chris, Ian, and I hiked Norumbega. It starts off straight up on the Goat Trail, but it’s pretty gentle coming down the other side. The climb is fun and the views are great.

We have avoided this trail in recent years because the last mile is a brutal, boring hike through tree roots. This time, we decided to cross the road and go around the Upper Haddock Pond to loop back to the road. It added only about a half mile and was a much better hike. The total hike was about 3.8 miles with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. Ian says it was a bit over 11,000 steps.

The weather continues to be beautiful, but yesterday and today are really windy, so there are no water sports on the schedule.

I’m having a really interesting “health” situation.  For about 2 months my hip has been hurting me. It’s a recurring problem that I’ve been dealing with for years. Previously it was diagnosed as piriformis syndrome and I think that’s absolutely right.

It’s gradually gotten better as the vacation has progressed. But, I’ve discovered that it Hurst most when I’m walking flat surfaces, like walking the road by the house.  It doesn’t hut at all hiking! Climbing the Goat Trail? No problem! The more uneven the surface, the better.  Isn’t that bizarre? I can’t explain it,  but I’m happy for it. The next mountain is Pemetic, maybe tomorrow.

I love those flowers with the spiky yellow centers!

You are probably getting more rotation of the hip joint with hiking/climbing so maybe that it the therapy it needed.

Hip suggestion as I’ve had various diagnoses for my 45 year problem. Hand ball ball behind you as you roll it against a wall. Just find the spot that hurts the most. Also a strap around your foot and pull your leg across your body. I’ve found slow meandering around museums and stores does it in so longer steps help me. Was just about normal until a couple of weeks ago when I was in an accident. Back to physical therapy for a least 6 more weeks.

The piriformis issue fascinates me. That muscle crosses the sciatic nerve and can compress it, causing the pain. If you search it, you will find some self care stretches that you can do. The “figure 4” stretch is suggested a lot. I have done that one for my lower back in the past.

Beautiful views (and blanket too!). Very glad you’re able to enjoy the hikes without pain – there must be something in the rotation that helps somehow but I’m not a physiotherapist so have no idea.
