First days in Acadia

Ian and Laura arrived late Friday night, and we’re a bit jet lagged Saturday. But we all got out for an early morning walk. Then we settled out in the sun for reading time and lunch. I also got my sewing corner set up.

We have a loft bedroom that will not be used until tomorrow, so I took the opportunity to lay out the quilt. I’m working on the missing wedges now.

Yesterday morning, Chris and I set out to hike Beech Mountain.  It’s our traditional warm-up hike, and it was beautiful,  as always.  This lake is Long Pond and is where we kayak. The trail is about 2.5 miles and has every type of terrain: soft woodland floor, tree roots, granite steps, some rock scrambling, and hiking across buried granite boulders. It’s a perfect intro hike and had some beautiful viewing spots.

The leaves are changing early this year. We think it’s because it’s been such a dry summer. It’s a nice treat to get some flashes of color on our hikes.

We saw this pretty mushroom on the hike. Google says it’s Dyer’s Polypore. It’s not edible but is used in natural dyeing. My limited research informs me that this produces oranges, yellows, and greens, depending on the mordant.

In the afternoon, I made my gluten-free bread and crackers for the week while everyone else went for a walk.

We got some rain around dinner time, but we expect a beautiful,  sunny day today.

Ian and I end every day with a cribbage match. So far, he’s up 2 – 0.

You have made a lot of progress on the quilt top! It is looking spectacular! What a beautiful place you are visiting! I noticed there are many leaves falling already; like you said must be the hot dry summer. Patty

the view from your sewing corner looks like you are in the treetops. The quilt is looking fantastic.
That mushroom is interesting, I would have not thought to use it in dyeing.

I’d be hard pressed to get much sewing done with a view like that outside the window. I feel badly for the trees that are suffering with the heat and dry conditions this year, although we can’t help but enjoy the varying colours.
