A crochet capelet

Yesterday turned out to be a surprisingly productive day. We started the day by getting my military ID renewed. We went expecting DMV level of service but we left with my new ID 5 minutes before my appointment! Thank you DoD for the friendly and fast service.

Then my friend, Marcy, and I ran some errands to drop off sewing machines for service, drop off fabric for donation and do a little grocery shopping. Our work was finished so early that I had time to make some fabric postcards the rest of the day. I can’t share those until later this month but today I can share another finish.

This is a little capelet that I’ve been working on for a few months. I finished the body of it a few weeks ago but just got around to the edging this weekend. Of course it took half the time that I estimated to finish it. I think it turned out quite cute.

The pattern is by Jayda In Stitches on YouTube and it’s called the Easter Capelet. She has a large following and it’s justified. She does a very thorough job with her tutorials. I make a lot of capes/shawls for donation and I was looking for something different when this popped up in my feed this Spring. I was particularly drawn to this series of stitches used for increasing. I think it adds a nice detail to a simple double crochet cape.

The yarn is Caron Cotton Cakes that I’ve had for a few years and I used an I/5.5mm crochet hook.

I searched through my button file cabinet and found this big button for the closure. Jayda provides 3 different closure options in the tutorial.

I thought that the edging really upped the design of this and made it really cute. I was about to run out of the light blue yarn but had the darker blue left over from another project and decided to switch to that. I’m glad I did because I think it really improves the overall look of the shawl.

This one is ready for the donation closet for September delivery. I’ll probably start another one of my own shawls to have for a car project as we drive to Maine at the end of the month.

I may not post tomorrow. I have errands and meetings today and don’t expect that I’ll get anything creative done.

That did turn out cute. I can see a little old lady wearing that over the sweaters she already has on to add another layer. My mom worked at a nursing home decades ago and they didn’t have air conditioning. Mom would come home just melting from the heat in the summer and would say “it must have been hot today because one of the little old ladies took off one of her five sweaters!” Patty

The shawl is quite lovely. I know it will be cherished by the recipient. That two color edging adds a special element to the finished piece.

I can see this caplet would be very useful for someone needing a bit of extra warmth, particularly those in wheelchairs.

I’m sure this will be welcomed by somebody because it’s so pretty. It looks as though it would stay in place which is always a good thing when it comes to shawls or capelets.
