Winter birthday postcards

I have 2 December birthdays and a few more winter birthdays. I always try to make these so that they don’t look anything like Christmas and I think I succeeded with these.

Like a lot of my cards, these started with selecting some element or background fabric without any sort of real plan. These particular cards started with the background fabrics and the color pink. The background fabrics are leftover from summer craft camp with Ella. She picked these fabrics to make a blanket for her new puppy. One of these cards will be for her Grandmother so I thought it appropriate to make a birthday card from some of the scraps. For the pink, I found one that matched a piece of pink Cricut vinyl.

When I started these I envisioned this orientation but you can see that changed at the end.

I had another of the blue floral fabric that I wanted to include but to needed one more color. I tried yellow but this lime green was better. I had not committed to much stitching at this point but the whole thing looked kind of flat.

That was much better! I knew that I was going to print a pink “Happy Birthday” message but it also needed more green.

I fused on the message and lime green edging. This is when I realized that the orientation needed to change. Look at what a difference just that one bit of stitching against the green ribbon males. Pretty crazy, huh?

The blue edging finished them off. I made 6 of these cards. That should get me through winter.

Those look great. Yes, that blue line of stitching really does finish the look nicely.

It always amazes me how one little element will really make something look complete.

The dark blue at the bottom edge of the green anchors it nicely.

I always marvel at just how much difference a little change can make sometimes. I notice it most when I’m cross stitching and think I will skip the boring outlining step…then I remind myself that it DOES make a difference, in a good way.
