Memory Quilt – part 4

I’m a bit of an idiot but I survived the affliction and got section 1 of 8 together for the memory quilt! The idiot part came when I was translating my graph paper map to actual sewing. I had cut my little block templates wrong for TWO of these blocks! It took a little extra cutting and sewing but I finally got it together in the right dimensions.

This section is the lower left corner. The whole quilt will, hopefully, have a 2″ border all the way around, if I have enough black fabric. I might have to include some navy blues in the mix. Before I get started on the next section I’ll try to prep all the black/dark fabrics and get a feel for how much I have.

They also brought me one additional garment, Christmas PJs from last year. I got a block made from it and replace another block that was already represented by another shirt in the quilt.

I won’t get back to this until Friday. Today and tomorrow I’ll be at sewing with my quilt club and I’ll be working on a veterans quilt. But I’m energized to get back to this now that I know what I’m doing. Also, later this week I need to get some dyeing done. I need a quilt back for this quilt, one for Mom and I need to dye fabrics for the bear quilt that I want to work on while we are on vacation in January.

It’s coming together so nicely. Not sure how the Christmas fabric will work into it, but I’m sure you’ll come up with a way.

I really love how you were able to take many disparate pieces and make it a coherent piece. I have always avoided making these type of quilts because of the chaos and clunkiness. You chose great colors for sashing and deliberate choices how to place pieces. Great job with a tough assignment.

I love how your blocks are coming together. Honestly, it’s kind of helpful to me to read about other sewists making mistakes, because I’m too hard on myself when I make mistakes, and I seem to make a lot of them! As the old saying goes, someone who isn’t making any mistakes isn’t doing anything! I’m sure this t-shirt quilt will be cherished.

The Christmas PJ block is kind of an interesting addition. I would have preferred to use that in a pillow that could be brought out for Christmas, but you are doing what they want so it works.

I hope you end up with enough dark fabric to complete the top. That is a large project!
