Red, white and beige?

Happy Birthday America!

It’s my second favorite holiday, next to Thanksgiving. Chris is fixing a very nice celebratory dinner and Mom is going to join us. I’m going to attempt a new gluten-free sourdough recipe to have with dinner. Fingers crossed that it works!

The rest of my post is all beige! I have two new projects to share.

I got the new jacket cut out and started sewing. In this photo you can see a dotted fabric. That’s the facing fabric that I didn’t know I needed. As I was cutting out the jacket I realized that the fabric was probably too thick to use it for the facings. I searched my stash and found this flax/cotton blend that was the right color. I wasn’t sure about the dots but I think it will be kind of fun.

The dotted fabric means that I’m going to use the darker buttons on the left.

I started sewing and one of the first changes I made was to the back. The pattern calls for a reverse pleat in the back, like a shirt. I didn’t think that would look good so I chose to gather the back to the yoke instead and I’m really happy with it. There’s a center back seam because the fabric was too narrow to cut one piece.

I got as far as getting the collar constructed. You can see how the dotted fabric will peek out under the embroidered linen. I like it.

In other beige news, I started my next big blanket. It’s going to be the Sober Granny that I’ve made 2 or 3 times before. It’s going to be patterned like the first blue blanket on this page.

These are the colors. I have an absolute ton of the brown and rust yarns so I can make this as big as I want….or probably make 2 blankets. For now, I’ll just focus on this one. It will be a good project to take to Maine because, aside from counting rows, it’s pretty mindless.

To all of my USA friends, I hope you have a very Happy Independence Day!

    Have a very Happy Holiday!!!

I like the colors for the new blanket. And I love the lining fabric for the jacket. I think it is going to be gorgeous.

I like a gathered back better that a pleat. It puts the fullness all across instead of just in the center. The dotted fabric is a fun addition.

Somehow I missed your July 2 post with the completed feed sack jacket model. It looks great, fit is good, patchwork combinations are fun.

And now the surprise facings in the linen version. More fun! I love surprise fittings on garment insides, and especially when they peek out a bit. I agree that the gathered back is an upgrade from the center pleat. This will be such a lovely jacket.

I certainly never knew that you would have to construct the collar separately (proves how much garment sewing I do!!). I like your choice of facing fabric so understand why those buttons would work best.

The dotted lining fabric is a lovely design choice! Isn’t it great that we can make modifications to patterns because we can sew? I agree, the softly gathered back will be nicer (and probably more comfortable) than a reverse pleat.
