It’s a really simple quilt but it’s one of my recent favorites. This quilt started on vacation in August 2017. We stayed on a beautiful lake near Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. I tool about 9 yards of fabric with me and a bunch of DyeNaFlow paints. I spent two afternoons reading a book and sunprinting tons of fabric.
I knew that I was going to make a quilt for our bed and I knew that I wanted a simple pattern that would just show off the fabrics. I played around with several designs using squares and rectangles but then remembered that my friend had this template for a giant applecore. Unfortunately this particular template isn’t available anymore but there are a couple of large ones available if you dig deep enough into the web.
Some of the fabrics were printed to get very crisp detail like these 3 with leaves and ferns.
Others were printed with grasses and pine needles to get more subtle prints.
There was no need for fancy quilting as the fabrics are the focus. I used a pantograph called Woodgrain with Highlights (top) and So Fine (bottom) threads.
The only fabric that isn’t sun printed is the border fabric. That one was one of my 3-yard Galaxy fabrics and it was perfect for this quilt.
Here’s the label that I made for the quilt. The star marks the location of Sebec Lake where I sun printed all of the fabrics. The other motifs loosely represent the state tree/flower (pine) and blueberries.
I didn’t want to waste any of the sunprinted fabrics so I used the leftovers to make 34 fabric postcards.
