The Groovy Quilts

This is a series of quilts that are made from ice dyed fabrics. Many were 12″ squares and some were 42″ squares. The fabrics are fun to dye and there’s no ability to plan the results. Because the ice dyed blocks do the work, the layouts are easy.

Groovy I

Groovy I, 60″ x 76″, finished in 2019

This is a “leftovers” quilt made from the leftovers of Groovy II (below). I ice dyed a lot of little squares. Most are in Groovy II and these are the leftover blocks. The squares were cut to 12.5″ and the sashing cut at 3.5″. The batting is Quilter’s Dream Blend and it was stitched with Rainbows and So Fine(bobbin) using a swirly pantograph.

The quilt was made for Jamie, the (now former) husband of a friend who loves everything tie dye.

The backing is a dyed spiral in his favorite color, green.

Groovy II

Groovy II, 90″ square, finished in 2020

This was the quilt I had in mind when Anne and I decided to ice dye over 100 square of folded fabric. This is the summer quilt for our bed which means that the batting is a flannel sheet to make it lightweight. The squares were cut to 12.5″ and the sashing cut at 3.5″. I used the same swirly pantogaph as Groovy I with Rainbows thread in the needle and So Fine in the bobbin. Here are all the blocks.

The backing was ice dyed in the bottom of the same bin where some of the squares were ice dyed. I like to fold my bin fabric in half to get a mirror image result. It’s like a giant Rorschach Test. I see something different every time I see it. I will use this side for the top from time to time.

These quilts were so much fun to make. We spent a day folding the fabric and then a day for ice dyeing. After that it was a really simple quilt to piece. I could see doing this one again.

Groovy III

Groovy 3 quilt, 92″ square, finished 2022

Groovy III, was finished in August 2022. This one started with 2 Crystals (42″ square). One was set on the diagonal and another was cut 0n quarters on the diagonal to make the corners. The border blocks were cut to 12.5″ square. Sashing widths range from 2.5 – 3.3 inches to make the placements balance out.

The batting is a Pellon cotton/poly blend that softens up nicely after a wash. It’s quilted with Magnifico and SoFine threads using the Star Swirl pantograph.

The backing is a hand dyed gradient.

It fits on the bed really nice.
