I love scrap quilts and it’s a good thing because I have trouble throwing bits of fabric out. A couple of years ago(prior to 2007) I read an article in American Quilter Magazine called Mile-A-Minute Quilts. It sounded like a fun technique to use up piles of scraps. My technique doesn’t work quite like the article but that is where the idea was sparked. I took my scrap bin and sorted the bits into groups – red/black, brights, blue/tans and greens and then sewed like crazy. I made lots of blocks and started developing layout schemes in Electric Quilt .

Mardi Gras is the first in the “scrap bin” series. I used the bright blocks and a traditional sashing and cornerstone setting. Then I used it to practice ruler work on my longarm. I stitched in the ditch the blocks and sashing, used squiggle lines in the blocks (I tried other motifs but nothing showed) and used a circle template for the sashing and stipple in the cornerstones. It was great practice. The quilting was done with Superior’s King Tut Thread.
