Big Blue Quilt

Big Blue Quilt, about 93″ square

I spend a month each summer in Maine and I try to have a piecing project for the trip. I do as much prep ahead of time as I can so that I can spend the month sewing. This is the project that I started in Maine in 2023. I knew when I started it that it would be a gift for my oldest brother and his wife. They love blue so this should work for them.

This quilt started simply because my drawer of hand dyed blue scraps was overflowing and I wanted to use them. I found this bow tie pattern in a Kaffe Fassett book (Simple Shapes, Spectacular Quilts) and it seemed easy and fun to make. In the end, it was both of those things.

The quilt is made from squares and every block is made like this. I have a bag of little HSTs that will become something else later.

Then I made a lot of these little blocks and then pieced them into 4-patch blocks. The center of the quilt has blocks with dark bowties and light backgrounds. The border blocks are light bowties with dark backgrounds. It’s a really clever design.

The back is a hand dyed gradient.

The quilting is the Happy Times pantograph. This will keep the quilt soft and cuddly.
