2006 and Before

I got my APQS Millennium quilting machine in August 2005 so much of 2006 was spent learning the machine. In 2005 I quilted about 6 quilts for the Katrina effort and have no documentation of any of them. That’s probably a good thing because my quilting was horrible! These were the years when I transitioned from garment sewing to quilting and I was all about production. Finishing Kathy’s quilt in 2005 was a huge turning point for me. It was a hard quilt to make so getting it done got me through a lot of skill hurdles and finishing it got a huge cloud lifted.

Mardi Gras, the first of a series of crumb quilts. All of the quilts are here

This was a finish of a quilt that I made from leftover blocks from my Great-Grandmother, Flora. The pattern is called Dutchman’s Breeches. This quilt was gifted to one of my Mom’s cousins. You can see all of the “Flora Quilts” here.

Reversible Quilts

Sometime around 2004 Mom and I attended a quilt show in Greensboro and took a reversible quilt class with Sharon Pederson. We bought her Reversible Quilts book and there’s no other book in our libraries that have gotten more use. Mom still makes several reversible quilts each year.

I believe this is the reversible quilt that I started in that class. The “solid” fabrics are Cherrywood. This quilt is still being used in 2025. It’s the quilt that Chris pulls when he’s cold in his recliner in the winter. It’s very soft and cuddly.

Amanda’s Quilt – 2004 – This quilt was made as a wedding quilt for a military couple. One side is patriotic and the other is Christmas.

A quilt made for a store sample with Kaffe Fasset fabrics on one side and fish themed fabric on the other.

Another gifted quilt

These next 2 are both queen sized and were made at the same time.

This one was gifted to a friend in Nebraska. Chris visits every year for a hunting trip and they stay in an old log cabin. This quilt is in the log cabin.

This is Chris’ quilt with the pheasant fabric and plaids on one side and batik stars on the other. He loved this quilt. One year we took it to the river for a vacation long weekend. He accidentally threw it away when he took the trash to the dumpster.

Spectacular Scraps

I went to the Houston Quilt Festival in 2002 and took the Spectacular Scraps class from Judy Hooworth. I made the purple and green quilt at left in class. The technique was fun and she was a great instructor so we had here come to Montpelier to teach a class for my quilt club. The second quilt was the result of that class. It’s about 80″ square.

The Gift Quilts

I developed a pattern for a quick quilt that was great for making gift quilts. The tutorial is here. These are 3 of, at least, 6 that I’ve made.

Foundation Pieced

Early Art Quilts

In 2005 I participated in a couple of art quilt challenges. These 2 quilts are from those. Magic Carpet is the one that I went a little nuts over. It was a guild challenge where we were give 2 fabrics and could make whatever we wanted. I intended to just do the 12″ paper pieced quilt using a Carol Doak pattern. Then I sewed on a few beads. Over 100 hours later I was finally done. This was my first experience with being completely possessed by a quilt.

Kathy’s Memorial Quilt

Kathy’s Memorial Quilt, finished in 2005

This is the most difficult project I’ve ever made. You can read about it and see more photos here.
